Written Discourse: Process Writing
Teachers in every subject should remember that all students (including ELLs) benefit from writing activities. Even before they have a full understanding of the nuances of English phonology, syntax, grammar, etc., ELLs can and should be writing. Taking an ELL through the writing process (or at least some part of the process) - prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing - will be extremely helpful. Each of us can surely find ways to structure activities so that our students move from words to sentences to paragraphs . . . and more . . . .
