Grammar: Allow Your Students to “Drive” the
Conversation
Explicit instruction of grammar to students who are just learning English is not particularly useful. As stated previously, the goal of someone new to the language is production. However, as students’ ability to speak, read, and write develops, it is likely that grammatical challenges will arise. Some of your students, for example, may consistently be forgetting to use articles both orally and in writing. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since some languages (ex: Korean) do not have articles. This would be an excellent time to discuss this topic in more depth. Some students (particularly older ones) may already have a sophisticated development of grammar in their own language. As such, they will be likely to raise specific questions about English grammar (and syntax). Let these kinds of questions be the topic of your grammar lessons. To learn more about language differences, you might want to visit the Frankfurt International School’s website which has a lot of helpful information. A link is provided on the Links page.
