Written
Discourse: Examples of Explicit
Instruction
One way of helping your students (ELLs and native speakers alike) recognize conventions of written English is by sharing a variety of models. Being able to see how writers make connections, move from one idea to another, reinforce a point, etc. is extremely valuable. The more examples you can provide and the more practice you can give students (the only way to learn how to write is . . . to write), the easier it will be for them to express themselves on paper in their second (third, etc.) language.
