Grammar: Use Words Such as Academic English vs Correct/Incorrect
There will always be a debate about what is considered “correct.” People have very strong opinions on this topic. The reality is, however, that language is changing all the time. Talk to your students about this. Also tell them that there are occasions when it’s appropriate to break traditional rules of grammar. How we speak and write really depends on our audience and our purpose.
Few of us use "Standard English" all the time . . . and even the phrase Standard English is controversial because it carries an implicit judgment. Still, students need to know the language of academia (let's call it academic or formal English). As educators we are responsible for teaching them when (and how) to use it and when it can be ignored.
