Grammar: Familiarize Yourself With the Basic
Principles of English Grammar
As an ELL teacher, it is important that you know the following:
(a) parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, determiners – a broader category for articles); these are the “forms” that were mentioned in the conversation about syntax
(b) various ways that words form units within sentences (exs: noun, verb or adjective phrases, clauses. etc.)
(c) topics that provide challenges to ELLs and some native speakers (exs: subject-verb agreement, use of consistent verb tense, etc.)
An excellent writer’s handbook is Diana Hacker’s Rules for Writers. This text includes four chapters on major ESL challenges. You might not use this book with students, but it is a great textbook for your own reference. A link to her website and, specifically, some grammar exercises for you to review is included on the Links page.
