Phonology: Teaching Activities
Jazz chants (see the link on the Links page), choral readings, and Readers' Theatre (where the students read aloud scripts that you have written or chosen for them OR scripts they have written themselves) are great ways for students to practice their pronunciation. Each of these activities gives students an opportunity to work on intonation (the variation of spoken pitch) and expressiveness. All of our students - ELLs and native English speakers alike - can benefit from practice with diction, so make this a fun activity for all. Avoid singling out the ELLs. Provide your students who are new to English with explicit pronunciation instruction in small groups or one-on-one conferencing.
