Phonemic Awareness:
Keeping it Active
When engaging children
in phonemic awareness activities, make these activities fun! Use songs,
poems, riddles, and anything that gets kids playing with words. On the links page you will find a link to a
teacher-led phonemic awareness activity.
A useful reference text to have on hand is Words Their Way With English Learners (Helman, Bear, Templeton,
Invernizi, Johnston, 2012) which is a book devoted to word study and phonics,
vocabulary, and spelling and is designed specifically for multi-lingual
classrooms. I have always found that a good reference text provides the foundation for the instruction which the teacher can then use as a jumping off point for creative activities. Don't be shy about singing, chanting, foot stomping, and giggling. Sounds are delightful.
