Morphology: A Definition and Explanation
Morphology is the study and description of word formation. Many words consist of morphemes which are single units of meaning. A word can be a morpheme in and of itself. Take, for example, the word cat. Cat is a morpheme (specifically a free morpheme because it can stand on its own). When cat becomes cats, the word now consists of two morphemes - cat and -s. The -s is a morpheme (specifically a bound morpheme because it cannot stand alone). The addition of the -s affects the meaning of the original word. When you think about it, the key to understanding language is understanding the morphemes!
